Teacher
of the year

WHO:

  • Any teacher who promotes civic responsibility, flag etiquette, and patriotism is a prime candidate for the award

  • Consider teachers who plan field trips to city halls, organize volunteer projects, or invite local veterans for classroom speaking events

  • Any teacher cabpable of helping students understand the value of democracy and our American beliefs is a great candidate

WHAT DO I WIN?

  • Post 549 will categorize winners for grades K-5, 6-8, and 9-12 (labeled as elementary, middle, and high school, respectively)

  • Post winners will be sent up for district judging, which will then proceed to national judging

  • $1,000 for the national top winner in each category

  • $1,000 for each national top winner’s school

DEADLINE: December 15, 2020 to VFW Post 549 (due to Department by January 1, and to National Headquarters by February 1)

HOW TO SUBMIT:

  1. Download the application here. Fill it out digitally or legibly by hand.

  2. Write an essay (350 words or less) describing why this teacher deserves selection as VFW’s Teacher of the Year.

Public Servant
of the year

WHAT IS IT: Each year, the Veterans of Foreign Wars selects emergency medical technicians, law enforcement and firefighter personnel to receive VFW Public Servant Awards.

WHO: Includes categories for Law Enforcement, Firefighter, and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) of the Year.

  • VFW National Law Enforcement Public Servant Citation:  Any individual who serves in a municipal, county, state or federal unit tasked with enforcement of the laws pertaining to their area of responsibility. This award does not apply to individual employed by private companies or security services.

  • VFW National Firefighters Public Servant Citation: Any individual who actively fights fires as a member of any public or volunteer company organized to fight fires and give assistance to our nation’s citizens. 

  • VFW National Emergency Medical Technician Public Servant Citation:  Any individual, who actively gives emergency medical treatment, provides rescue service or civil disaster assistance as a member of any public or volunteer company organized to give emergency medical care, provide rescue and civil disaster assistance to our nation’s citizens.

CRITERIA:

  1. Recognition by their colleagues or those they serve.

  2. Consistent excellence in the performance of their duties.

  3. Consistent dedication to their official responsibilities over a period of years and continuous growth in responsibilities and skills within their profession. 

DOCUMENTATION NEEDED:

  1. Nomination letter containing the candidate’s name, title, address, telephone and identifying the award for which the individual should be considered. Include justification outlining background in the field, accomplishments and awards.

  2. This application.

Junior ROTC Cadet
of the year

WHO: JROTC cadets between the ages of 15 and 18, actively enrolled in an Arizona JROTC program at the time of selection. Applicants who reach their 18th birthday during the school year will remain eligible.

WHAT DO I WIN? $150 at the Post 549 level; $200 at the state level.

THINGS TO SUBMIT:

  • Photograph – The Cadet must appear in correct, complete uniform for their current rank; recommended photo size 3”x5”

  • High School Participation Record – a single page, single-sided resume of the candidate’s high school activities indicating academic achievements, offices held, honors received, and significant participation in other activities

  • JROTC Record – maximum of 3 pages, single-sided, listing all JROTC accomplishments and participation; include camps, training received, team participation, duties, and competitions participated in

  • Community Service Record – a single page, single-sided, resume listing participation in community and religious service organizations, noting leadership positions held and any recognition received.

  • Letters of recommendation – Submit three letters no more than two pages in length, single sided, from:

    • JROTC Instructor(s)

    • Community Leader(s)

    • Teacher/Faculty Member(s)

Scout
of the year

WHO:

  • Recipient of the Eagle Scout Award, Girl Scout Gold Award, Venture Summit Award or Sea Scout Quartermaster Award

  • Be a registered, active member of a Boy or Girl Scout Troop, Venturing Crew, or Sea Scout Ship at the time the above reward was received

  • Have demonstrated exemplary citizenship in school, Scouting, and community

  • Prior National Scout of the Year winners are inelgible

  • No minimum age; maximum age is 18 years

  • Cannot have already graduated high school

  • Scouts may enter through/be sponsored by only one VFW post

WHAT DO I WIN?

  1. $5,000 scholarship for national first (1st) place

  2. $3,000 scholarship for national second (2nd) place

  3. $1,000 scholarship for national third (3rd) place

THINGS TO SUBMIT:

  • Photograph of the scout in complete uniform with current rank and accoutrement (recommennd 3”x5” size)

  • School participation record

    • One page, single-sided

    • Resume of academic achievements, offices held, honors bestowed, significant activity participation

  • Scouting record

    • Maximum three pages, single-sided

    • List all participation beginning with Cub Scouts or Brownies, years of participation, unit numbers, and sponsors

    • Include when Eagle, Gold, Venture Summit, or Quartermaster awards were earned

    • Identify leadership positions held at all levels

    • Identify participation in large-scale Scouting events such as jamborees, Order of the Arrow conferences, etc.

    • Include the candidate’s Eagle, Gold, Venture Summit, or Quartermaster service project data

  • Community service record

    • One page, single-sided

    • Resume of participation in school, church, and other service projects

    • Note any leadership positions held

  • Letters of recommendation

    • A scout leader

    • A community member

    • A teacher/faculty member (if homeschooled, a parent letter is authorized)

    • One or two additional letter, no more than two pages in length, from local community members who have special knowledge of candidate abilities, strengths, and accomplishments
